Dr. Bassem Sassouh

Assistant Professor at Abu Dhabi Polytechnic, Academic Support Department (ASD) since 2018, Dr. Bassem has taught various courses, including Calculus I, Calculus II, Linear Algebra, Thermodynamics, and Intro to Programming and Problem-solving. Currently, he coordinates the Calculus I course and chairs the ASD Academic Committee. He oversees graduation projects and contributes to proposals, including one submitted to COP28. Driven by commitment to sustainability, he initiated and oversees the “Environmental Wellness Club,” fostering awareness campus-wide initiatives.

Before joining Abu Dhabi Polytechnic, Dr. Bassem served as a Research Officer at the National Research Council in Ottawa, Canada, from 2009 to 2017. In this capacity, he spearheaded projects in Quantitative Risk Assessment and probabilistic modeling, contributed to initiatives related to Infrastructure Climate Change Adaptation and to the development of a preliminary seismic risk screening tool for existing buildings in Canada. Simultaneously, from 2015 to 2017, he designed and taught Mathematics and Engineering courses for the master’s program in Infrastructure Protection and International Security (IPIS) at Carleton University.

During his post-doctoral role at Electricity of France (EDF) in Clamart, France (2007-2009), Dr. Bassem significantly contributed to integrating “Polynomial Chaos Expansion” (PCE) into OpenTURNS, an open-source software for the Treatment of Uncertainty Reliability and Statistics.

Earlier, Dr. Bassem completed his Ph.D. in Optimization and System Safety at the University of Technology of Troyes, France, specializing in Stochastic Modeling for Systems Subject to Multiple Operating Modes (2003-2007). He developed deterioration models and collaborated with Renault Industry on innovative approaches to mathematical modeling for deteriorating vehicle components.
